Rich haul by Delhi shuttlers in NZ championship

JAMMU, September 26: In A day of reversals Delhi retained Rahimtoola (men's) and Narang (boys) title while it upset defending champions Punjab in Shafi Qureshi Cup (girls) and Punjab upset defending champion Delhi in Chadha Cup (women's) by beating them in the finals of the North-Zone Badminton Championship which concluded at M.A. Stadium, here yesterday.

For men's title, defending champions Delhi beat Punjab 3-0. India player Madhur Kalia of Delhi performed well in the first singles to outplay Mohd Salim of Punjab 15-7, 15-13 while in the second singles Devinder Dhillon registered 2-0 (15-6, 15-13) straight set win over Rohan Kapoor. In the decider doubles, Praveen Devinder joined Devinder to beat the pair of Navdeep Singh and Munish Arora 15-8, 17-14.

The winning pair faced no difficulty in drubbing the opponents in the first set. However, in the second set, Navdeep and Munish played well coordinated game and offered tough resistance to the rivals and took the score to deuce at 14 each. But experienced winning pair sealed the fate of the encounter by claiming three consecutive points to retain the title.

However, in the Chadha Cup, last years runners up Punjab upset defending champions Delhi 2-0. In the singles, top player Meeta Bhandari of Punjab had to fight for the set. She beat Gayatri of Delhi 13-10, 11-7. In the doubles, Meeta and Nancy combination beat the guile of Gayatri and Kanika Kambo 15-7, 15-4.

Delhi upset Punjab in Shafi Cup 2-1 in a keenly contested finals. Gayatri beat Nazma Praveen of Punjab in the first singles 11-9, 11-1 while in the doubles, Nazma partnering with Sumit Kalra beat the pair of Gayatri and Kanika 15-11, 15-9 to equalise the score. In the hard fought decider singles, Kanika beat Sumit 11-8, 11-9.

In the Narang Cup, defending champions Delhi faced no difficulty in retaining the title and beat Punjab 2-0. Tanveer Gill of Delhi had to fight with Dilpreet Singh in the first singles 15-11, 14-17, 17-15. But in the doubles, Tanveer and Sandeep duo beat Dilpreet and Iqbal 15-11, 15-8.

With all the gold and silver medals in Delhi and Punjab's kitty, the hosts J&K had to be content with bronze in boys and girls category.
