NEW DELHI, SEPT 27: The Prasar Bharati has put its seal of approval on the telecast deal between the cricket board and Doordarshan for the five-year period of 1999-2004, which has raised much controversy.``We have ratified the agreement and now it is for the board to ratify it,'' top Prasar Bharati sources said tonight, adding that it had authorised its Chief Executive Officer Rajiv Ratan Shah to finalise the details at Prasar Bharati board's meeting held on September 25.
The sources said it was now for the cricket board (BCCI) to respond as Prasar Bharati had already given two sets of contracts signed by it to BCCI.
No decision had been taken on the contentious issue of DD contesting an arbitration award of seven million dollars to the private production company Worldtel, the sources said, adding no pre-condition should be attached in this regard.
The sources said DD's bid was the highest and it had also agreed to telecast domestic cricket and therefore, there should not be any hassle over thegranting of production contract to any particular party.
The board working committee had favoured granting the deal to DD, but its AGM held in Jaipur on September 21 and 22 had failed to take a final decision, with a rival group within BCCI alleging that the cricket authorities were trying to persuade DD to withdraw its court case contesting the arbitration award against Worldtel that rose from the 1996 World Cup held in the sub-continent.
Top board sources maintain that the deal could go through only if DD withdrew its court case, implying that the National telecaster should honour the arbitration award. Rival groups within BCCI also allege there were certain interests working to ensure that Worldtel was awarded the production contract.
The BCCI working committee which met in Mumbai on August 20 had decided to award the telecast deal to Prasar Bharati.
Board secretary Jaywant Lele had said DD will also show ``live 21 days'' of domestic cricket, including the finals of Ranji and Duleep trophies, theIrani Cup tie, all the four matches of the Challenger one-day series and the Wills Trophy matches.
