City lawyers on solidarity strike

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Sept 27: The District Bar Association has decided to abstain from work tomorrow to protest against police in action on a complaint filed by a Panchkula lawyer.

The decision to observe strike was taken here by Bar members under the presidentship of N. K. Nanda. A notice to this effect was also issued.

It may be recalled here that on September 15 a Panchkula lawyer, Sanjeev Gupta, had lodged an FIR against one Bala Gupta, her son and her brother alleging that they trespassed into his house, criminally intimidated him and also threatened to kill him. Gupta also maintained that he was injured in the process.

It was alleged that on the night of September 14, the above-stated entered his house without his permission. One of them was under the influence of liquor and he pulled Gupta outside the house. Gupta alleged that he was manhandled, apart from being threatened earlier on the telephone.

It's pertinent to mention here that the police are yet to effect arrests in this case.

Earlier the Panchkula Bar Association had also observed a strike against police inaction. Amit Singla, secretary of the association, said it was resolved to abstain from work till the arrest of those involved in the case.

Singla, along with other members of the association, met the Superintendent of Police Alok Mittal who assured them that the accused will be arrested soon as they were held guilty in the pre-arrest inquiry.

The work at Bar Association at Ambala remained suspended today against the inaction of the police in not arresting the accused persons.
