PANCHKULA, Sept 27: Crime rate has gone up considerably in the township and the recent incidents of robbery have sent shock waves in the township. Nine cases of dacoity were reported last year while this year seven have already been reported. Besides, around 10 cases were reported in the past few months in which middle-aged women were duped by a couple. Chandigarh Newsline talked to the local residents and found that they were living under constant fear and have lost faith in the police.A housewife, Kamla Mohan says: "One feels insecure while going out and even inside the house. We can't even rely on the servants who come for a few hours daily." She adds that the police should increase night vigil and must take prompt action.
Lt. Col (retd) L. K. Sharma, a resident of Sector 8, says that he has been staying there for the last 13 years. "Only in the recent years a feeling of insecurity has creeped in," he adds. He blames the labourers who stay in the houses which are under construction and suggests that there should be a check on them and those staying in the single rooms built by the owners as per the guidelines of HUDA. He doesn't blame the police for "they have limited resources".
Dr Sanjay Kalra, a dentist, has to keep his doors locked the whole day. He says that police are doing nothing and reach much after the incident. He also blames the residents who keep valuables in their homes. B. B. Kochhar, who owns a shop in Sector 8, says that police force is not enough to maintain law and order. He says that residents should ensure verification of their servants and tenants. He adds that the police intelligence should be such that the incidents are avoided and the accused are caught before committing the crime.
An elderly woman, Pramod Dutta, who stays with her husband, says that life has become very risky for the old couples. "We have lost faith in the police. All of us should be cautious if anything is suspected in the neighbourhood." She adds that there should be some check on the beggars and the salesmen. She suggests that spaces around the residences should be well lit.
Hema Nayar, an MFC student, says that police should remove the jhuggi dwellers from the residential areas.
