MUMBAI, SEPT 27: Rizvi College retained the Mumbai University inter-college football title at the University Pavilion today. A doughty Chinai were kept away for 90 uninspiring minutes, and it took a tie-breaker to provide a champion. Rizvi won 5-3.It was strange to see Rizvi's super league player Imchen Lanuchuba don the gloves and the No 1 jersey during the tie-breaker. It is routine to see the star player double up as goalkeeper at the inter-school level. But a specialist was warranted during a college game, one thought.
Lanuchuba did not need to do anything spectacular. After captain Sunil Rajak had put Rizvi 1-0 up, Amrish Bhave missed for Chinai, hitting the right post. After that, Rizvi had only to score all five from the spot. Francis Alvares, Lanuchuba, Luciano D'Souza and Harshal Naik ensured they did.
More than Amrish Bhave, it is Chinai's Akshay Rai who will rue his miss in the seventh minute. Chasing a long-ranger down the right flank, Rai caught up with the ball near the right post, withthe Rizvi goalkeeper woefully out of position, after he had misjudged the bounce. Rai only had to stop the ball and place it in; instead, he took a wild swipe and sent the ball out of play.
The only other decisive moment of the match came in the 35th minute, when Francis Alvares crossed from the left, and Luciano headed in. Luciano, last year's highest scorer, was declared off-side.
NM Commerce defeated Khalsa in another tie-break earlier to claim the bronze medal.
