Four wheels derail traffic from Mumbai

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 29: Rail traffic on the Mumbai-Pune section of the Central Railways was completely thrown out of gear for nearly eight hours after a box container wagon derailed near Begdewadi station this morning.

Nearly eight meters of the track on the down line to Pune were heavily damaged after the wagon jumped off the rails at around 7.30 am. The derailment occurred when the goods train was changing tracks and was moving towards the marshalling yard from the main line.

The wagon was carrying a heavy container and was third from the guards cabin. The last two container wagons and the guards cabin however remained on the tracks. Almost the entire train had crossed tracks near the Shelarwadi cabin when the derailment occurred. Due to the impact of the derailment, the track received a sudden jerk, and one of the rails of the main line was snapped.

Immediately after the derailment, the divisional traffic manager received information about the mishap. Central railway officials including the divisional traffic manager, divisional mechanical engineer, signal and telecommunication engineer, rushed to the derailment site and initiated the repair works.

As only the up line towards Mumbai was operational, the movement of all trains was severely affected. Express trains bound for Pune were detained at intermediate stations between Lonavla and Talegaon. Mumbai-bound trains in the morning were also running behind schedule.

The 6529 Dn Udyan Express scheduled to arrive at noon, reached only at 4.30 pm, and the 7307 Dn Koyna Express arrived at 4.40 pm, three hours behind schedule. Other affected trains were the 1021 Dn Indrayani Express, which arrived at 12.45 pm, 2027 Dn Shatabdi Express, which arrived at 1.45 pm, and the 1007 Dn Deccan Express, about four hours late. Running of local trains was also affected.

The derailed wagon was re-laid on the track and the damaged rails were replaced by new ones. The track repairs were completed by 3.30 pm, but it took further couple of hours for restoration of traffic.

Assistance booths were opened at Pune and Shivajinagar. Frequent announcements about the derailment were being made about the late running of trains.
