Rally flays Neeta murder, vows to end atrocities on women

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 29: Collegians came out on the street to condemn the brutal killing of 16-year-old Neeta Hendre for the second consecutive day when they took out a rally from Tilak Chowk near Alka theatre to Mahatma Phule Memorial on Wednesday morning.

Over 250 students of Garware, Jedhe and Fergusson College including atleast 200 girls participated in the rally which wound its way to Mahatma Phule Memorial via Sadashiv Peth and Ganj Peth.

Later, a condolence meeting was held at the Mahatma Phule Memorial at the end of which the participants took an oath that they would do their best to curb atrocities against women.

Addressing the meeting, Baba Adhav said women were still being treated like slaves and stressed the need to empower them.

Student leader Gumpha Kokate stated that the least the society could do for women was to let them live with dignity. Pratima Pardeshi, Kishore Jadhav, Baba Salve, M N Kamble, Vidyut Bhagvat, Anagha Tambe, Siddhartha Jagdeo and Manik Kamble demanded stringent action against those indulging in atrocities against women and sexual harassment.

A delegation of Pune City District Women Congress Committee leaders met Pune's Police Commissioner K K Kashyap and submitted a memorandum demanding stringent action against the police officials who allegedly dilly-dallied to investigate into the FIR lodged by Neeta's father Shamrao naming Bhavbandhe as the kidnapper.

The Mahatma Phule Samaj Vikas Sanstha has passed a resolution demanding severe punishment to Neeta's killer. Organisation chief Dhananjay Sonsale said the organisation would launch a massive campaign to spread awareness against sexual harassment of women from October 2.

Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Police MS Maheshgauri today visited the spot at Swargate police lines where Neeta's body was found. Maheshgauri also interrogated Satish Bhavbandhe.

Top police officials said Bhavbandhe had stated that he had taken Neeta to a garden before they reached the place in Swargate police lines where Neeta was found dead. However, they added, the facts are still being ascertained.
