It was no different today when the New Zealanders received a wet welcome for their tour opener and were confined to nets on a portion of the outfield (towards the West stand and MCA office), the rest of the ground not conducive for play.

David Trist, making his debut as coach, visited the stadium and ruled out the nets because of the conditions. A helping hand, though, courtesy Ajay Shirke, a major local contractor obliged them the premises of his helipad.

First the Kiwis, then India A players flexed their muscles before the proceedings get under way tomorrow weather permitting.

Incidentally this is the first time that a visiting team has practiced at an area other than the Nehru Stadium. The conditions evoked the ire of one fan who said: ``This is all because of the poor drainage system that has left the ground waterlogged.''

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Cricket Association is deploying the super sopper round the clock in an attempt to ensure a start on time. One official quipped: ``Finally the super sopper is made use off.''

However, the weather does not seem to be too sporting and forecasts cast doubts on the first day's play.
