Air display at 3 BRD draws crowds

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Oct 3: As part of the 67th anniversary celebrations of the Indian Air Force, a static display of MI-17 helicopters, its armaments and various aircraft engines was organised at No.3 Base Repair Depot today.

The MI-17 chopper with all its armaments on display, was the star attraction for the visitors as it had played a prominent role during Operation Vijay in the Kargil sector.

Besides, various aero-engines which power the MI-8 and MI-17 helicopters as well as the AN-32 transport aircraft and their components were also on display.

A dazzling aerobatic display of remotely controlled aeromodels, sponsored by the local chapter of the Aeronautical Society of India, was put up by Paramjit Singh and Upinder Singh, both from of the No.I Chandigarh NCC Air Squadron.

The displays drew huge crowds, including the students from the Punjab Engineering College, who took keen interest in the cutaway sections of the aero-engines.

The Air Officer Commanding, 3 BRD, Air Commodore, Arvinda Agarwal inaugurated the static display. Later, talking to mediapersons, he said that MI-17 was the only IAF chopper which could fly effectively in difficult terrain like Kargil. This helicopter, as well as the MI-25/35 gunships, were being overhauled by 3 BRD, he added.

Several stalls were also set up by the Air Force Wives Welfare Association on the occasion.
