SC moots Euro norms for two-wheelers too

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, OCT 4: Alarmed by the growing vehicular pollution in Delhi, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre whether two and three-wheelers could be subjected to stringent Euro-I and Euro-II norms as had been done in the case of cars.

"Keeping in view the level of pollution still existing in the National Capital Region (NCR), we have suggested to the counsel for parties that it is desirable to impose application of Euro-I and Euro-II emission norms, as outlined in our earlier order, also to two and three wheelers with suitable modifications," a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice B N Kirpal and Justice V N Khare said.

The court in its April 29 order had said that no car without confirming to Euro-I norm would be registered in NCR after June 1 and without Euro-II norm after April 1, 2000.

The bench asked Additional Solicitor General Kirit N Raval, appearing for both the Centre and Delhi Government, to respond to suggestions including ban on registration of diesel cars inDelhi suggested by the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority.
