NEW DELHI, OCT 4: It was one of those days again at the DTA complex on day one of the main section of the 1999 edition of the DSCL National Hardcourt Tennis hot, humid and totally lacklustre. The day began with the Indian Oil Corporation's top women seeds Sai Jayalakshmy and Rushmi Chakravarthi taking on two visibly overawed youngsters in Delhi's Vishika Chhetri and Simmi Rani respectively.While Rushmi wasted no time in getting down to business -- she demolished the Chandigarh-based Simi 6-0, 6-0 -- Sai made some heavy weather of the first set for no evident reason before getting a grip on herself and coasting through the second. Sai won 6-3, 6-0.
A visibly under-the-weather Sonal Phadke just gifted away her first round match to Gujarat's sixth seed Karishma Patel 5-7, 0-6 after twice using pain-killing spray on her calves during changeovers. Sonal, the under-18 second seed and a pre-tournament dark horse pick even in the women's section for many, may not even play her second round match tomorrow. Shejust about beat unheralded Nischella Reddy (AP) in an earlier u-18 match 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).The upset of the day was u-18 boys seed Kedar Tembe's 4-6 6-2 4-6.loss to Maharashtrian statemate Benjamin Xavier.
