PALO ALTO, OCT 6: Internet star Yahoo Inc Wednesday kicked off the third quarter earnings season on a strong note as it reported operating income grew more than five-fold while sales more than doubled.The online media company, which operates the most popular Internet portal connecting users to a range of online content and commerce services, said its pro forma third quarter operating income totalled $ 40.4 million or 14 cents per share, up from $ 6.9 million or two cents per share in the year-ago period.
Most analysts who follow the company had been predicting a profit of about nine cents per share, according to First Call, which tracks the estimates. Including all the unusual charges, which cover merger costs and amortization of intangible assets, Yahoo reported a net profit of $ 14.9 million or five cents per diluted share, compared with a profit of $ 4.3 million or one cent per share in the year-ago period.
