BANGALORE, OCT 7: Elections had put on hold the facelift of Bangalore airport. But now that the poll process is over, Bangaloreans can look forward to the much-talked-about aerobridges at the airport. The two aerobridges, being installed at the airport, are scheduled to be inaugurated any day now. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was only waiting for the completion of the polls. The areobridges will ease passenger traffic, particularly that of international flights, once operational.
Passengers will not need to wait for the ladders to either board the plane or get off it, AAI sources told The Indian Express.
The need for the aerobridges was imperative, especially after the traffic increased because of the `open sky' policy announced in the early 1990's, which allowed several private airlines to operate on various sectors.
Following the increasing number of international flights to and from Bangalore, AAI took up a project in 1996, which included the plan to construct an internationalflight block. The plan also incorporated the installation of two aerobridges.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation will spend Rs 21.83 lakh on the entire project, including escalators, lifts, and so on in the international block. Though the construction of the building was completed in 1998, alongwith other facilities like immigration and customs, it is the aerobridges that remain to be made operational.
