Dandavate, Antulay among surprise upsets in Maharashtra

MUMBAI, OCT 7: Former finance minister Madhu Dandavate, former State CM A R Antulay were among surprise upsets in Maharashtra with results for 42 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats being announced so far on Thursday.

Veteran parliamentarian and former finance minister Madhu Dandavate was defeated by a margin of over 11 thousand votes from the Rajapur constituency by sitting Shiv Sena MP and minister in the Vajpayee government Suresh Prabhu. Sitting MP from Kulaba constituency and former chief minister A R Antulay who contested from Aurangabad parliamentary constituency lost to first time contestant State Minister Chandrakant Khaire of the Shiv Sena.

The major upset in Mumbai was the defeat of sitting MP from South Mumbai Murli Deora (Congress) who met his match in BJP's Jaywantiben Mehta, while BJP Mumbai unit president Kirit Somaiya scored an upset win over Congress MP Gurudas Kamat in North-East LS constituency. Actor Sunil Dutt (Congress) made a comeback after two LS polls defeating two time Sena MP MadhukarSarpotdar.

In the high-profile Ramtek constituency former MP Banwarilal Purohit lost to Subodh Mohite (Sena). In Buldhana LS constituency sitting MP Mukul Wasnik (Congress) was upset by BJP's Anandrao Adsul while sitting MP from the Amravati constituency R S Gavai of Repulican Party of India was defeated by Anant Gudhe of Shiv Sena and Gavai's colleague Jogendra Kawade from Chimur LS constituency of Chimur was defeated by BJP's Namdeo Diwathe. In Pandharpur, seven time Congress MP Sandeepan Thorat was defeated by Dalit leader Ramdas Athavale who contested as an indepedent this time.

In the Assembly elections sitting MLA from Colaba constituency Ashok Dhatrak who contested on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket was pushed to third place by Marzban Patrawala (Congress) and Sena's Prakash Bhuvad.

Sitting MLA from Chinchpokli Faiyaz Ahmed (Janata Dal-S) lost to Madhu Chavan of the Congress while in a major upset mill leader Sachin Ahir (NCP) defeated Minister of Higher Education Datta Rane (Sena) inSewri.
