Dara associate's diary bares links with BJP

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KEONJHAR, OCT 12: A personal diary seized from Nilamani Mohanta, said to be a close associate of Dara Singh, has reportedly put the State police in a spot. Nilamani was arrested on July 19 from Rohiniduma village under Patna police range.

Highly-placed sources said the diary contains the addresses and phone numbers of nearly 40 persons. The entries reportedly include names of some BJP leaders including a former MP from Keonjhar.

While the Congress and Left parties have been trying to link Dara Singh and his associates with the Sangh Parivar ever since the murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines, the Parivar has been constantly refuting the charges. In view of this ongoing political battle, the police administration has apparently become cautious in dealing with the matter.

The people whose names figure in the diary are yet to be interrogated.

Sources further said the diary is being considered as a ``top confidential'' document and had been sent to the forensic laboratory for examination. Theexperts have confirmed that the entries are in Nilamani's own handwriting.

Nilamani, who has been kept in the district jail here, however, said most of the addresses belonged to those who participated at the ``Srikrishna Barga'' camp held at Vrindaban from November 1998 to June 1999. While he admitted to his links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) camps held near his village and the ``Go Suraksha Samiti'' for the past five years, he denied having links with Dara. ``I only met him once,'' he claimed.

The police, however, claim that Nilamani Mohanta and Andha Naik were with Dara Singh on July 19 when a raid was conducted in which police opened fire, but Dara and Andha managed to escape.

Police records reveal that Nilamani was one of the 15 accused named in an FIR lodged with the Sadar police station on March 16, 1998 in a case connected with an attack on one Haguru Gadasara.
