Rains lash State; farmer killed

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Oct 12: One person was killed and four seriously injured at a village in Naswadi taluka near Vadodara and three others injured in Rander area of Surat in the post-monsoon showers that lashed most parts of the State in the last 24 hours. However, the rains, which are expected to continue till Wednesday, bode well for farmers.

A 65-year-old farmer, identified as Raisinh K Solanki, a resident of Kandwa village was electrocuted around 2.30 pm today when lightning struck him while he was in his maize fields. Around the same time, four others, who were also in their fields in the same village were hit by another streak of lightning. In Rander, three persons were injured when the shed of a grocery shop collapsed.

The showers have been mainly due to troughing and some upper air activity in the region, Met department sources said. ``The monsoon has already withdrawn from the State, but the sudden showers are due to some activity localised in parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra,'' Ahmedabad Meteorology department director Dr R K Kankane said.

The State's 99 talukas received rains from morning to evening on Tuesday, while 82 talukas in 20 districts received rains from Monday evening to Tuesday morning.

Notably, Rajkot received 34 mm rain and Maliya Miyana town in the district received 97 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, while Khambhat in Anand district received 95 mm rain.

All eight talukas in Ahmedabad district received above 20 mm rains with Daskroi receiving 55 mm, Bavla 50 mm, Sanand 35 mm, Dholka 27 mm, and Barvada 45 mm rain. Even in the arid Kutch district, eight of the 11 talukas received above 20 mm of rain with Bhachau topping the list with 60 mm rain.

In the other dry district of Surendranagar, four talukas received above 30 mm rain. In Bhavnagar, Mahuva received 40 mm and Palitana 26 mm rain on Tuesday. Surat city received 31 mm, Visavadar in Junagadh 41 mm and Sankheda in Vadodara 38 mm rain.

An increase has been registered in almost all the 174 dams all over the State. An increase of 76.04 cubic mm water has been registered in storage in the 41 schemes in the State. Kutch, which has 20 schemes, registered an increase of 6.04 cubic mm rainfall and Saurashtra region, having 113 schemes, has registered an increase of 86.25 cubic mm of water in storage in the last 24 hours, according to the Irrigation Department, taking the total increase in the State to 86.25 cubic mm water in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, lightning struck the microwave tower located outside Surat railway station on Tuesday morning, disrupting computerised reservation for about six hours before the link was restored. Though no one was injured in the accident, the disruption affected hundreds of passengers who couldn't get reservations done.

Station Superintendent D R Solanki said while the reservation computers failed for about six hours, the current booking and signalling system continued to function normally and there was no delay in the schedule of train timings too.
