Lecturers' future uncertain

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Oct 13: With the state government sanctioning only 176 teaching posts out of the 358 demanded by the M S University, the future of another 170-odd temporary lecturers who have been in the job for the past eight or so years is in limbo.

The university has around 12,000 teaching posts, and for the vacant posts of different cadres the university had been engaging temporary lecturers who were being retained by the university after an interview.

The lecturers who have been recruited have not yet been given any official appointment letter, and in a few departments of the university there are teachers who are continuing though they know they might be asked to discontinue after sometime.

``The problem is, we are not being told whether we would be retained or not, as the university only has 176 posts. The sanction for every faculty is also not distributed as per the requirement,'' said a lecturer of the Faculty of Science.

``In our department we need four lecturers, but have the sanction for only three. The fourth one has not yet been asked to discontinue, so he is still uncertain about his orders and continues to teach in the faculty'' said a lecturer at the Faculty of Commerce.

``We are working just on the unofficial instructions of our department head,'' said a lecturer at the Faculty of Science. ``But a few others have not been told anything and are still continuing. They are not even sure whether they will receive their pay or not,'' said a lecturer.

Pro Vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar De said, ``Yes, there is problem and we need to accommodate all the lecturers, but before that we have to justify the workload of every teacher to the government.''

Senior professors in the university admit that the problem the university authorities face is that certain departments have more teachers than justified by the number of students, hence the work load for every teacher could not be defined. This division of work load was taking time, added a senior professor.
