VADODARA, Oct 13: The State Labour Department has decided to expedite cases pending against Hema Chemicals, a Gorwa-based company accused of dumping highly acidic and corrosive pollutants in the open. The company is facing 33 pollution-related cases. When asked why the State government was not taking any action against the company, Labour Minister Bhupendra Lakhawala, while claiming that his department could only issue notices, said, ``I don't have any right to order closure of any unit. But I have written to the departments concerned recommending that it be closed.'' But in spite of many notices the company was not getting its act together, he added.
However, when asked Ambubhai, the personal assistant of Environment and Forest Minister Kanji Patel, said no recommendation had been received from the labour minister. Gujarat Pollution Control Board authorities could not be contacted. On Tuesday, the Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti submitted a memorandum to the district collector asking it to carry out health, soil and underground water studies in Gorwa.
The company last week was charged with dumping chromium ore waste in and around Gorwa polluting underground water and causing health hazards for residents.
