The businessman, charged under the Customs Act, was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded to magisterial custody. Later, the businessman moved a bail application. While opposing the bail plea, prosecution counsel Krishna Ratnaparkhe revealed that the businessman was suspected to be linked with an inter-state duty evasion racket. He submitted that the officers checked the consignment at the Central Warehousing Corporation's godowns in Pimpri on a tip off and found the ball bearings hidden in the drums on Tuesday.

Ashwin Naik brought to city
Underworld don Ashwin Naik, who was recently caught while attempting to cross the Indo-Bangladesh border, was on Wednesday brought to Pune from Mumbai. Police said Naik's involvement was suspected in the abduction and murder of estate agent-cum-builder Deepak Deo.

Deo was abducted from his Wakdewadi residence about two-and-a-half years back. His body was found near Wai in Satara district. Nine persons including Naik gang henchman Sandip Dicholkar and a city hotelier Anil Bhide were arrested .Police said the motive was the suspicion that Deo had links with its rival Gawli gang.

Fire in clinic injures three
Three persons suffered high degree burns when a major fire broke out at a private dental clinic on East Street in Pune Cantonment area this evening. All the three were the patients undergoing treatment at the clinic.

Among the injured were Manda Vinod Mhaske (27) of Pune Cantonment, Reena Govind Kamble (26) of Kasewadi slums in Bhavani Peth and Arshad Ayub Shaikh (30) from Kamshet. They have been admitted to a private hospital, police said. An electric short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire. The fire was brought under control by fire tenders of the PM C and PCB.
