Hurriyat team not allowed to meet detenues in Jodhpur jail

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Oct 15: A two-member Hurriyat team comprising deputy director of Institute of Kashmir Studies G M Bhat and senior advocate Mohammed Tufail was not allowed to meet 15 Hurriyat leaders lodged in Jodhpur jail, a Hurriyat spokesman alleged here today.

The spokesman claimed that the team members who visited the jail premises on October 13 were not allowed to meet the Hurriyat leaders despite the fact that Mohammed Tufail is the legal counsel of the detainees and had asked permission of meeting in the said capacity.

At least 15 Hurriyat leaders, including its chairman Syedali Shah Geelani, have been lodged in Jodhpur jail of Rajasthan following their arrest under the Public Safety Act.

Besides Geelani, other prominent leaders including Yaseen Malik, Abdul Gani Bhat, Moulana Abbas Ansari, Javed Ahmed Mir and Mohammed Ashraf Sehrai were shifted to Jodhpur jail after their recent arrest.

This is for the first time in seven years that the top Hurriyat leaders have been jailed outside thestate.

Malik and Mir had been lodged in Jodhpur jail during their active role in militancy in late 80's. Both belong to the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (Yaseen) faction.

Meanwhile in Srinagar, police and security forces raided Hurriyat conference headquarters at Rajbagh and arrested its four activists on the eve of general strike called by the umbrella organisation of separatist outfits, official sources said.

They said the arrested activists were Mohammad Yakoob Mujahide, Abdul Samad Inquilabi, Ghulam Hassan and Mohammad Ayub Naikoo.
