Indians dominate another athletic meet

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, OCT 15: Veteran PT Usha was back. So was long jumper, Sanjay Kumar Rai, the new exciting thing on the Indian atheltics scene. Both duly won their respective events, but even as they finished with the chores, there was more a sigh of relief than elation or dejection on the faces of both winners and losers at the Raja Bhalendra Singh International athletics meet.

There is just one more meet, the National Championships at the Bhopal to go for the athletes and then it will be rest and off-season for sometime. The need to get rid competition phobia is alright, but the Amateur Athetics Federation of India could have timed the meet somewhat better. The Nationals in the last week of October, is however, something the athletes can ill-afford to miss. For a win there could well mean a promotion in their respctive departments, as most employers count only victories in National Championships.

Little wonder then many of the athletes, who stayed from one or both meets this week will however make the trip toBhopal. Gulab Chand will be one such athlete, whose need for a National title some years ago had lead to his collusion with senior colleague, Bahadur Prasad tanking a race in the 1995 Nationals at Jamshedpur.
