Centre may amend Foreign Contributions Act soon

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
HYDERABAD, OCT 17: The Centre would, if necessary, amend the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act to curb its misuse by certain dubious non-government organisations (NGOs), Union Minister of State for Home C H Vidyasagar Rao said on Saturday.

The amendments had become necessary as certain NGOs were acting in contravention of the act by squandering away the foreign contributions and carrying out `political activity and religious conversions', Rao told reporters here.

``Though foreign funds are meant for the uplift of the poor, some organisations are either swallowing them or using for political purpose which is dangerous for the country,'' Rao, who is also president of Andhra Pradesh BJP unit, said.

The Minister said he would take up a thorough review of the implementation of the act to identify instances of NGOs misusing the act and initiate necessary follow-up action. ``Some NGOs have already been blacklisted and show-cause notices issued on some others. Unfortunately, Andhra Pradesh tops the listpertaining to misuse of the act,'' he said.

Replying to a question on alleged activities of the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the city, Rao, said his ministry would pay `special attention' to the problem.
