Teachers warn of indefinite strike from December 8

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 20: Teachers stepped out of classrooms today and marched from Shaniwarwada to the Collectorate, demanding implementation of the revised pay scales recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

An indefinite state-wide teachers strike will be launched from December 8, if their demands are not met, announced the Poona University Teachers Association (PUTA), the Poona University and College Teachers Organisation (PUCTO) and the Poona University Teachers Forum (PUTF) which participated in the demonstration, called by the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (MFUCTO) all over the State today.

The MFUCTO has been in correspondence with the State government since August '98, regarding implementation of the central orders on the revision of pay scales of university and college teachers with effect from January '96. It had announced an indefinite state-wide strike from July 21 this year, which was called off after elections were announced.

A resolution announcing the strike from December 8 and condemning the ``injustice and humiliation of the university and degree college teachers, where a class IV employee is appointed on a basic salary of Rs 2550 and a lecturer for Rs 2200,'' was submitted to the chief minister today, said the PUTA, PUCTO, and the PUTF in a press release today.
