NNH upstage St. Xavier's

MUMBAI, OCT 20: A tight press in the second half helped Nagpada Neighbourhood House turn the tables on St Xavier's College in a senior division match of the Hoop-a-Loop inaugural basketball league, sponsored by United Phosphorus Ltd, at NNH Court on Sunday.

Xavier's enjoyed a half-time lead of 39-28, but after NNH applied the squeeze, were outscored 49-16 in the second session.

In a close first division match held at Police Grounds, Naigaum, Navi Mumbai YMCA accounted for GM Police 60-57.

RESULTS

Senior Div: NNH 77 (Matin Shaikh 22, Rashid Shaikh 15, Noor Khan 11) bt Xavier's 55 (Yogesh Jaiswal 19, Placid Fernandes 16) HT 28-39.

First Div: Hoopers 76 (Rakesh Sheth 15, Dipesh Moni 13, Kamlesh Naik 12, GP Ramaswamy 9) bt Fr Agnel 55 (S Avinash 22, KB Binoy 12) HT 39-21; Navi Mumbai YMCA 60 (Gurinder Singh 29, Prashant Sawant 16, Holy Chawla 11) bt GM Police 57 (Anwar Memon 15, Noor Mohammed 13, Irfan Khan 10) HT 33-27; School of Basketball 51 (Stanny Monteiro 19, Richard Homen 14, ChinmayBhandarkar 8) bt Kurla Eagles 44 (Neil D'Souza 15, Patrick M 11) HT 24-20.

Mithibai score

Mithibai narrowly defeated Vartak College 7-6 to advance to the third round of the inter-college handball tournament held at Somaiya College, Vidyavihar, today. In another close match, Podar defeated Somaiya Science 11-10.

RESULTS (2nd round)

Mithibai bt Vartak 7-6; NM bt Wada 20-16; RA Podar bt Somaiya Science 11-10; Mahatma w/o Royal; (1st round): Mithibai w/o Khandwala; Wada w/o RKT; Somaiya Science bt Pillai's, Panvel 9-8.

Tata Electric held

Sutarwar (Sahar) held Tata Electric 1-1, after a goalless first-half, in the eight-team MDFA Super football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Electric took the lead in the 47th minute through Arun Mendon who scored off a pass by Kalyan Sarkar.

The Sahar boys fought back and restored parity in the dying minutes, when an Apparao Chimma through pass was neatly volleyed home by Dinesh Patnaik.

Easy for Thakkar

State juniorchampion Himanshu Thakkar beat Kunal Vaswani 15-12, 15-2 in a men's singles second-round match of the Maharashtra State Open badminton tournament at the Bandra Gymkhana, today.

RESULTS

Men's singles (2nd round): Murli Subramaniam bt Akshay Thakkar 13-15, 15-5, 15-1; Himanshu Thakkar bt Kunal Vaswani 15-12, 15-2.

Junior boys singles (3rd round): Rahul Tipnis bt Anish Sadanand 15-1, 15-2; Swapnil Vyvaharahar bt Merrick Gonsalves 15-5, 15-7; Himanshu Thakkar bt Syed Hyder 15-11, 15-8.
