City rowers gearing for National meet

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20: Twelve rowers including four in the girls group are honing their skill at the Sukhna Lake for the forthcoming junior national rowing championship to be held at Mahoba (Uttar Pradesh) from October 28 to 30.

In the last edition of the meet held at Pune, Navjot Khaira of Chandigarh missed a bronze by a narrow margin in the single scull event.

However, the budding oarsman is confident of performing better in the coming meet. ``I am hoping to figure in the medal tally this time,'' said Navjot who is attending the camp for the past two week at the Sukhna Lake under the guidance of Rajeev Sharma, rowing coach.

The other event in which the city rowers are hoping to grab a medal is cox-four event. ``We have a good group, who are clocking excellent time in the training. If they repeat the same performance in the nationals, they would be able to came in the first three in the cox-four,'' informed the coach.

In the girls group, Kirandeep, who recently had a rich haul of gold medals in the Panjab University Inter-College swimming meet, is also going strong.

The selected probables who are undergoing training at the Lake Club are Karan Singh, Navjot Khaira, Avtar Singh, Hasri Narian, Harsimran Brar, Ajeshwar Sarao, Vishal Bhardwaj and Gurpreet Singh in the boys section and Gurpreet Kaur, Kirandeep Kaur, Soumya, Preet in the girls group.
