Assault case -- SHO told to register FIR

CHANDIGARH, Oct 22: On an application requesting registration of a case against three people including Batra Theatre proprietor, accused of trespassing the applicant's house and assaulting her, UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Naval Kumar issued directions the SHO, Sector 19, to register an FIR and investigate the matter.

The application was filed here on May 13 by Mahesh Batra, who stated that his wife, Manju, was assaulted by Naresh Batra (proprietor, Batra Theatre), Anil Aggarwal and Kiran Kakkar (Naresh Batra's sister) in his absence.

It was stated in the application that earlier also there had been a dispute between him and his brother Naresh, who after the death of their father allegedly installed himself as chairman-cum-managing director of all the companies. He alleged that after committing acts of forgery, he also transferred shares of the complainant, his wife and two sons from the companies having assets worth crores into a company which had no assets worth a name. He added that when he came to know of this operation, he lodged a fraud case against his brother.

The complainant further alleged that after this case was registered, the accused started harassing his family in various ways. So much so that Kiran Kakkar filed a complaint in January, alleging that Manju Batra had stolen some articles from her house.

Later, however, a compromise was reached and the complainant's wife returned some articles to Kiran Kakkar. The complainant alleged that even after that Naresh Batra and Anil Aggarwal trespassed into his house and assaulted his wife in his absence.

Corruption case: Patwari, kanungo get 3-year RI
A city court here sentenced a patwari and a kanungo to rigorous imprisonment for three years for their involvement in a case wherein they received illegal gratification from one Brijinder Singh in lieu of sparing the demolition of his house.

Sentencing the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act and also under Section 120 B IPC, UT Additional Sessions Judge S.S. Lamba also directed them to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and undergo RI for another six months in case of default of payment of fine.

The case dates back to October 27, 1994, when Brijinder Singh gave a complaint to SP, CBI, alleging that Ramesh Kumar (patwari) and Balbir Singh (kanungo) are extorting money from the villagers of Dadu Majra on the threat that they would otherwise demolish their houses constructed on the agricultural land.

He further alleged that on October 25, the two visited him at his house in Dadu Majra and threatened to demolish the house, alleging the same has been constructed in violation of rules.

They added that they would spare him only if he pays them Rs 2,000. The two asked him to visit them in the estate office on October 27 and pay the same.

Drug peddler in judicial custody
City resident Harpal Singh, booked here on October 20 for allegedly carrying drugs, was today remanded to judicial custody by a city court.

Earlier, the accused, from whose possession 40 grams of smack was recovered, had been sent to police custody for a day. The police had requested the court to grant custody of five days on grounds that his sources were to be known.

The period of police remand of the accused ended today and he was sent to judicial custody till November 5. He was booked under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
