Desai XI storm into final

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
OCTOBER 22: Ramakant Desai XI crushed Subhash Gupte XI by six wickets, with 20 overs to spare, and qualified for the final of the inaugural Loksatta Trophy (U-16) one-day cricket tournament by virtue of a better quotient.

The Desai bowlers first dismissed their opponents for a measly 107 in the 42nd over and then piled up 111 for four in the 30th over, albeit after a couple of hiccups. Winning the toss and electing to bat proved disastrous for Gupte XI, as the batsmen were all at sea against some good medium pace bowling by Paul Valthaty.

With Altaf Shaikh and Hrishikesh Puranik giving him able support, Gupte XI were reduced to 59 for five by the 25th over. Only four of their batsman reached double figures, with Rohan Thakur's 14 being the best effort.

Harshad Rawle, the Desai XI skipper, wiped out the tail to return figures of three for 19.

Desai XI received a jolt as opener Amit Redkar was declared leg before to Prasad Chavan off the very first ball of the innings. Paul Valthaty spponed up a catchon the off side, and Sagar Dumbre was done in by Prasad Chavan for a duck; Desai XI were struggling at 29-3.

But Rawale batted sensibly in the company of Chinmay Madiye to take the score to 70, before the former was castled, going back and offering no shot to off-spinner Sanket Sapre. Extra cautious batting by Chinmay and Swapnil saw Desai XI taking more time than necessary to achieve the target.

Brief scores: Subhash Gupte XI 107 in 41.4 overs (Valthaty 2-10, Sunasra 2-25, Rawale 3-19) lost to Ramakant Desai XI 111-4 in 29.5 overs (Harshad Rawale 26, Chinmay Madiye 38 not out, Chavan 2-28).
