Darko double spurs Juventus

LONDON, OCT 22: Three-time Uefa Cup champion Juventus got two goals from Darko Kovacevic in a 3-1 victory at Sofia's Levski in one of 19 second-round, first-leg Uefa Cup matches last night.

The second-leg games will be played in two weeks.

Steaua Bucharest, Mallorca, AS Roma also picked up victories with AS Monaco settling for a draw at Widzew Lodz.

Sunday Oliseh opened for Juventus with on a 20-metre shot in the 24th minute at the Georgi Asparuhov stadium. Kovacevic made it 2-0 in the 53rd and scored the final goal in the 89th minute, slipping the ball under plunging Levski goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov after a pass from Zinedine Zidane.

Serge Yoffou scored Levski's lone goal from 16 metres in the 55th after a pass from Aleksandar Aleksandrov.

Juventus mid-fielder Jonathan Bachini and Levski's defender Predrag Pazin were sent off in the 15th and in the 80th minute, respectively, after being twice booked for rough play.

At Lodz, Poland, Widzew Lodz held favoured as monaco to a1-1 draw as strikerartur wichniarek converted a penalty in the 5th after he was pulled down by defender philippe christanval. Monaco equalised in the 40th when ludovic giuly fired home from 16 metres.

At Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest defeated 2-0, England's West Ham with goals from Laurentiu Rosu (40th) and Sabin Ilie (57th). At Goteborg, Sweden, Vincenzo Montella scored in the 37th and 52nd as AS Roma took an important 2-0 away victory over IFK Goteborg.

At Teplice, Czech Republic, Diego Tristan scored twice as Spain's Real Mallorca downed Teplice 2-1. Pavel Verbir scored for the Czechs.In other early matches played yesterday: Werder Bremen 0, Viking 0; Inter Bratislava 0, Nantes 3; Slavia Prague 3, Grasshoppers 1.

Ivo ulich scored twice for Slavia Prague (20th, 50th) with the other for Tomas Kuchar. Hakan Yakin scored for Grasshoppers.

In second-round, first-leg matches played Tuesday: Aristhes Salonika 2, Celta Vigo 2; Udinese 1, Legia Warsaw 0; Deportivo la Coruna 3, Montpellier 1. Two first-leg matches will be playednext Thursday: Tottenham vs Kaiserslautern, RC Lens vs Vitesse.
