October 22: Himanshu Thakkar, junior second seed, prevailed 15-6, 5-15, 15-13 over men's second seed Vivek Gautam in the men's singles quarter-finals of the Maharashtra State Open badminton tournament at the Bandra Gymkhana, today.

Men's singles (QF): Mayur Ghatnekar bt Murli Subramaniam 15-10, 15-8.

Jr boys singles (QF): Akshay Thakkar bt Rahul Tipnis 13-15 15-9 15-6; Himanshu Thakkar bt Swapnil Vyavaharkar 15-4 15-3.

Suresh scores hat-trick

A Hat-trick by a suresh was the feature of Don Bosco Youth Centre A's 5-1 rout of BPT Reynolds in the MDFA Division I-B football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Johnny Dias and Ashish Patel were the other scorers for DBYC. Suraj Singh reduced the margin.

In the Division III tie, Podar swamped Fatima Beach Boys 7-0. B. Mel (3 hat-trick), Rishi Chouhan (3 hat-trick) and Samir Sengupta scored.

Xavier's triumph

St Xavier's Sports Club (Vile Parle) bt Larsen & Toubro 2-1 in the Late KosalramVeterans football tournament on their homeground, today.

Results: St Xavier's SC 2 (Louis Conception 2) bt L&T 1 (RV Hosabettu); Bombay Customs 3 (Santimano Geovani, Albert Pinheiro, Jerome Mathias) bt RCF 1 (Sushil Kumar); Western Railway 1 bt Mahindras 0.

Muzumdar to lead

Amol Muzumdar will lead MCA Colts in the Police Shield cricket, starting on October 30.

Team: Amol Muzumdar (captain), Nishit Shetty, Mandar Phadke, Kiran Powar, Praful Dhule, Nilesh Patwardhan, Rahul Thakur, Zanak Mistry, Vishal Mahadik, Sandip Dahad, Vinay Dandekar, Vinit Sarang, Naushad Khan, Ramesh Pawar and Dushyant Kadam.

Hrishikesh Shende (Govt. Law) will lead Mumbai University in the same tournament.
