NEW DELHI, October 22: Delhi did not have the bowling strength to dismiss the Haryana team in their second essay although they had almost an entire day (303 minutes) at their disposal. Thus, the North Zone Cooch Behar Trophy (u-19) league match between the teams ended in a draw at the Air Force Station Palam ground here today.Delhi had to content with five points, gained through first-innings lead, while Haryana collected three. Despite being forced to follow on after being dismissed for 150 in reply to Delhi's 341, Haryana held out to a draw, making 199 for the loss of five wickets. Skipper Satish Olhan led the way with a defiant 92 (258m, 230b, 14x4) and shared a 109-run for the third wicket with Sumit Sharma (57: 130m, 110b, 10x4) that shut the doors for Delhi's hopes of forcing an outright win in their opening game of the season.
Left-arm spinner Angad Bedi who finished with three for 27 in the first innings, was given just seven overs. With the team being packed with batsmen and having only three regular bowlers, Delhi could not force an outright win as they had to resort to giving non-regular bowlers more overs in an effort to separate big partnerships. Siddharth Verma claimed two wickets in his 15 overs while medium pacer Rakesh Raman Jha claimed two for 47 from his 18.5 overs.
But Delhi's inability to get the opposition dismissed cheaply cannot take the credit away from the Haryana batsmen, especially Olhan and Sumit Sharma who batted freely and confidently to blunt and expose the limited bowling resources at Delhi's disposal. With eight runs short of his century, Olhan threw away his wicket in the mandatory overs, forcing the teams to call off play. Delhi take on Himachal on Monday.
Brief scores
Delhi: 341.; Haryana: 150 all out (Ishan Ganda 41, Amit Suman 5/37, Angad Bedi 3/27) and 199 for 5 (Satish Olhan 92, Sumit Sharma 57, Praveen Sharma 26, Rakesh Raman Jha 2 / 47, Siddharth Verma 2/ 36, Rajan Gupta 1/ 44).
