NAGPUR, OCT 27: Former Lok Sabha member and senior Congress leader Banwarilal Purohit has reiterated that there was huge corruption in rewarding contracts of cement roads and fly-overs in the State, particularly in Nagpur city, through Public Works Department (PWD) and other agencies.Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, Purohit pointed out that the Lokayukta of the State had already started an inquiry to probe the alleged irregularities in construction of cement roads in the city.
Reacting to the statement of former (PWD) minister and newly-elected leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Council Nitin Gadkari, who dared the Congress-NCP Government to prove any charges of corruption or irregularities against any Sena-BJP minister, Purohit dubbed him as a `thick-skinned' person, pointing out that the ongoing inquiry by the Lokayukta had established that there was a prima facie case of corruption in the construction of cement roads in Nagpur.
He also endorsed the Chief MinisterVilasrao Deshmukh's announcement that the new Government would publish a white paper on the present state of financial condition of the State: ``Now he must act in this regard without further delay.''
It was the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which described the financial condition of Maharashtra as `worse than Bihar', a couple of years back, Purohit further pointed out and alleged that the `corrupt deeds' of Sena-BJP Government had led to such a situation.
Answering a question, the senior Congress leader said that the statement of former MPCC chief Ranjit Deshmukh about injustice to Vidarbha in representation of ministers in the Vilasrao Deshmukh Cabinet was made in haste: ``The full Cabinet is yet to be set up. How can we judge that an injustice was done to Vidarbha when the comprehensive Cabinet and portfolios of ministers are yet to be declared.''
Purohit, who contested the Lok Sabha elections from the neighbouring Ramtek constituency, felt that huge invalid votes was the reason for his defeat. Around38,000 votes were found to be invalid and of them about 30,000 voters had cast their votes for the Congress. However, as they also cast vote against another symbol in confusion because of simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, those votes were treated as invalid. ``I could not educate my voters and suffered the defeat,'' he quipped.
