NEW DELHI, OCT 27: The week-old nationwide truckers strike was called off on Wednesday night after the Government assured the All India Motor Transport Congress that it would consider declaring the transport sector an industry. The strike was called off following a settlement between the Government and the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), which spearheaded the agitation, an official announcement said. The announcement was made at a press conference addressed jointly by Surface Transport Minister Nitish Kumar and AIMTC president O P Aggarwal. The Government agreed to withdraw the October 11 notification hiking license and other fees, but refused to roll back the 35 per cent increase in the diesel price. Aggarwal said the strike had been called off with immediate effect adding he had already sent messages to State Transport federations to resume work.
The strike was called to protest against the hike in diesel prices. After negotiations that lasted for more than three hours, the AIMTC climbed downon their demand on diesel price rollback.
The transporters and the Government considered issues including collection of toll charges, reduction in quantum of permit fee, fixation of minimum freight rates under the Motor Vehicles Act and declaration of road transport as an industry. Surface Transport Minister Nitish Kumar merely said, "The Government's position regarding diesel price hike has already been stated".
The Government agreed that the "possibility of reviewing the quantum of toll to be collected should be examined in detail". Joshi said this would be done by a committee after collecting the required details.
On permit fees, the Government agreed to include the issue in the agenda for the Transport Development Council meeting. It also agreed to consider and take necessary steps with regard to industry status for the road transport sector.
