Two die of asphyxiation
Two labourers hired for clearing an underground sewer in Naroda area reportedly died of asphyxiation in the wee hours of October 27. The incident took place on October 26 when residents of Mahalaxmi Society in the area whose illegal sewer connection was disconnected by the civil authorities called in Dahyabhai Vijalbhai (25) and Prakashbhai Nathabhai (23) for de-clogging the overflowing sewer. Soon after Dahyabhai went down the manhole, he began to suffocate and passed out. When Prakashbhai rushed down to help his co-worker, he too fell unconscious. Both later died.

Governor presents awards
Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari presented Mahila Suraksha Awards to three women and two women's organisations for five years since 1994, at a function in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Manjulaben Dave of Jamnagar was given the award for 1994. Other winners are Yaminiben Desai of Patan for 1995, Jagrut Mahila Sangthan (Anand) for 1996, Jyotsnaben Shah of Vadodara for 1997, and Jyoti Samaj of Navsari for 1998. The award carries Rs 50,000 cash for a social worker and Rs 1 lakh for a voluntary organisation, an official Press note said.

Cong committee to hold meetings
Natwar Lal Shah, chairman of the Committee constituted by Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president C D Patel to assess the party's performance in the Lok Sabha elections, will hold meetings with Congress leaders from Valsad, Dahod and Chotaudepur constituencies from November 31 to December 3, a GPCC release has said.

Change in train timings
The timings of train no 9912/9911 Ahmedabad-Patan Intercity Express and the train no. 940 Dn Ahmedabad-Patan Passenger have been changed with immediate effect.
