Registrar seeks exemption from appearance in court

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Oct 27: Justice M S Shah of Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed Gujarat University Registrar M P Jadia to file an application in the University Service Tribunal requesting exemption from personal appearance during hearing of a show-cause notice issued to him.

Jadia was issued a show-cause last week by the tribunal judge Rajendra Patel asking him to explain why his (the judge's) residence telephone number was printed without permission and his name and honorifics not mentioned in the University diary of 1999-2000.

When the case came up for hearing today, it was submitted by the counsel for Gujarat University M M Desai that it would be difficult for Jadia to remain present at every hearing due to his preoccupation with work. The court observed that it would be proper for it to intervene at this stage since the case was pending with the tribunal. However, the court directed the tribunal to consider Jadia's application seeking exemption from personal appearance at every hearing.

The issue came to light after someone called up Justice Patel at his residence.
