Motorists drive past dying accident victim

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, NOV 3: In what could be termed as the height of callousness an accident victim lay in a critical condition for nearly half-an-hour as motorists whizzed past on the railway bridge; totally ignoring the fervent pleas of the victim's wife and children.

Amarlal Kanhaiyyalal Kundnani, the 36-year-old trader from Pimpri, finally died of his injuries. The accident occurred when Kundnani's scooter dashed against the concrete railings of the railway bridge near Pimpri police chowky on Monday.

Gidwani's wife Meena (32) and daughters nine-year-old Deepa and seven-year-old Kanchan escaped with a few bruises, according to the police. The mishap took place while the members of Kundnani family were returning home after celebrating Deepa's birthday at around 12:15 am on Monday, sub-inspector A M Kadam said.

According to Kadam, the impact of the scooter's dash against the bridge was such that the young trader was flung down along with the scooter, from a height of about 25 feet. He suffered multiple internalinjuries on his chest and fell unconscious. Meena, Deepa and Kanchan, who fell on the overbridge, suffered some bruises.

Amarlal lay haplessly in the wild bushes under the overbridge for nearly 20 minutes after the accident while several vehicles sped by ignoring Meena, Deepa and Kanchan's pleas for help. Attempts to rescue the young trader started only after the driver of an autorickshaw plying on the railway overbridge responded to Meena's cries for help and went under the bridge to find out Amarlal in the darkness.

Amarlal was brought on the overbridge and rushed to a private hospital in Chinchwad. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital, where he succumbed early in the morning.
