GSS -- Keeping traditions alive

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Nov 3: Gujarat Sanskar Samaj was founded by Gujarat Refinery in March 1965, which was even before the Refinery started transporting petroleum products through its pipelines.

Any member of Gujrefin family, whether Gujarati or non-Gujarati, can become a member of this Samaj by paying a nominal membership fee. With an aim to revive Gujarat's artistic heritage, its culture and its tradition of hospitality, the Samaj has organised a lot of social, religious, educational and cultural activities over the past 35 years.

Every year the Samaj sponsors academic awards to outstanding students. It also runs a sewing class for women, which not only awards them certificates but also helps them in earning a livelihood. Women staying in neighbouring regions attend the class in large numbers even though they are not members of the Samaj.

The Samaj gives a lot of importance to social and religious activities. Every year, the Navratri festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm. People from various religions and regions come to enjoy this festival.

The Samaj also arranges cultural programmes like Ras Garba, drama and Rangoli competitions where people not only from Baroda but also from neighbouring areas like IPCL Township, Koyali, Bajwa, Karachiya, Undera come together to compete and win prizes.

The Gujarat Refinery Management celebrates important days like 15th August, 26th January, Refinery Day and organises stage programmes that include famous artists like Kundnika Pandya and The Valonu Group.

At present the Samaj is in the stable hands of leaders like Mr Pankaj Patel, Mr V.R. Patel and others who work hard to keep the aims and traditions of the Samaj alive.

Pulse-Polio Camp: As per a WHO directive, the Government of Gujarat had directed all medical hospitals (Private, government and undertaking) to arrange a Pulse Polio Programme on six dates for all children upto the age of five.

Such a camp was first organised at the Gujarat Refinery Hospital on October 24, from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. About 375 children, out of the approximate 545, from the township turned up for the camp.

However, a door-to-door survey and Oral Polio Dose drive was conducted on October 27, to fulfil the target. Dr Usha Raj, ACMO & Dr Gopa Das, JCMO along with DGM (Medical) participated in the camp.
