Rail-roko today to protest against apex court ruling

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Nov 3: The city unit of the Republican Party of India (youth wing), supported by the labour unions of South Gujarat, plans a rail roko at the Surat railway station on Thursday in protest against a recent Supreme Court decree basing BC and OBC promotions on merit, rather than social status.

In a release on Wednesday, Yuva RPI city president, Siddharth Samudre said that even after 50 years of Independence, SCs, STs and OBCs had not been given their due rights. Expressing anguish, he said that the ruling would negate all efforts made to improve the condition of the oppressed lot.

The RPI also demanded that the Centre pass a resolution according to which members of the backward classes would be allowed promotions on the basis of their background. The agitation will begin at 9 am.
