Dortmund fail to make it to round two

ASSOCIATED PRESS
LONDON, NOV 3: Titlists three seasons ago, Borussia Dortmund failed to make it to the 2nd round of the Champions Cup this time after a disastrous 0-1 loss to weakened, last place Boavista in the final round of group matches. Dortmund's vastly-experienced international defender Juergen Kohler couldn't get out of the way of a shot from Pedro Emanuel and deflected it in for the only goal of the game in the 17th minute.

The loss to the Portuguese, who left off five of the irregular first team and played with only 10 men for most of the second half, meant that Feyenoord grabbed the second qualifying place from Group C after a late goal by Brazilian Somalia gave the Dutch team a 1-0 victory over already-qualified Rosenborg of Norway.

There was more bad news for Germany as Dynamo Kiev scrambled to the second qualifying place from Group A despite losing 0-1 at home to Lazio, the Italian Serie A leaders who had already clinched the top place.

Bayer Leverkusen had the chance to overtake the Ukrainian team butwere held to a 0-0 tie by last place Maribor of Slovenia. The Germans sorely missed their top striker Ulf Kristen, who was sidelined by a suspension.

Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin are two more German teams who have the chance to advance to the final 16 but they could miss out as well if the results of today's games don't go their way. Bayern, last season's losing finalists, must beat Glasgow Rangers, while Hertha needs at least a point at Chelsea.

The other teams through are defending titlists Manchester United, Italy's Lazio and Fiorentina, Spain's Valencia, Barcelona and Real Madrid, Bordeaux and Olympique Marseille of France, Rosenborg of Norway, FC Porto of Portugal and Sparta Prague of the Czech Republic.

Fiorentina and Barcelona celebrated their qualification with a 3-3 tie in Florence yesterday, with Brazilian Rivaldo scoring twice for the Spanish soccer giants and Argentine forward Abel Balbo hitting two for the home team.Manchester United clinched the top spot in Group D by edging Sturm Graz2-1 at Old Trafford with goals from Norwegian striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Irish midfielder Roy Keane.

Graz clinched a place in UEFA Cup by finishing third beacuse Croatia Zagreb was held 2-2 by Marseille thanks to a late leveller by the home team's striker, Kaba Diawara.

In yesterday's other game, Dutch winger Marc Overmars scored twice and Croatian Davor Suker added another as Arsenal, already headed for the UEFA Cup as third place finishers, gained a consolation 3-2 win at Aik Solna in Group B. Andreas Andersson replied with two for Aik.

Tomorrow, AC Milan hope to beat Galatasaray in Istanbul and make up two points on both Chelsea and Hertha Berlin, who meet at Stamford Bridge, each needing a point to advance and oust the Italian champions.

The surviving 16 go into a second-round draw on Friday and will wind up in four more groups of four. UEFA has decided to seed the teams so that no more than two group winners are together and neither are teams from the same country.
