South-East, Thane champs

Express News Service
MUMBAI, November 3: Both defending champions, Mumbai South-East and Thane, bit the dust in the final of the 25th Maharashtra State sub-junior basketball tournament at Fr Agnel Complex today.

Thane were toppled 35-61 by last year's runner-up Pune in the girls final, while captain Franco D'Mello's sensible play saw Mumbai North beat South-East 51-49 in the boys final.

The Pune girls should consider themselves lucky to be in the final. In this morning's semis against Nagpur, they trailed 34-35 with five second remaining, the ball possession with Nagpur. But Nagpur made a ghastly turnover, and Shweta Sirsat converted for Pune, to send them ahead.

Thane's resistance in the final came in the first quarter, when Devashree Patwardhan scored seven points to give them a slender 14-13 lead. But Thane's poor bench strength was exposed in the second quarter, and with Devashree going scoreless in the third, it was curtains for the girls from Dombivli.

The boys final came alive in the fourth quarter, when MumbaiSouth-East began to narrow the lead their Northern citymates enjoyed through the match.Three baskets by Obed Shaikh brought them within one point on two occasions, but Franco D'Mello distributed the ball well, and set up Manish Singh with good assists to keep North ahead. The Northern skipper had earlier helped his team open up crucial a nine-point half-time lead.
