PUNE, Nov 5: Several objectionable articles, including the charger of a cellular phone, audio and video cassettes as well as a huge amount in cash were found during a search of the Donje Yard in Yerawada Central Prison, where MLA Pappu Kalani has been lodged, on Thursday. The prison officials who carried out the entire operation have submitted a report to the Inspector General of Police (Prison) T Singarvel recommending a thorough inquiry into the matter.
While Singarvel was stated to be out of station, top senior jail officials have confirmed the reports about the search of Donje Yard and recovery of objectionable articles.
``A complete inquiry will be carried out to find out how these articles found their way inside the high security jail and suitable action will be taken if any jail officials are found involved,'' they assured.
A team of sleuths from the vigilance branch of prison department had searched several cells at the Donje Yard including the one in which Pappu Kalani is kept, throughout Thursday afternoon and evening. The search, which started shortly after 1.30 pm, was on till late in the evening.
The prison department officials said the decision of carrying out a surprise check at the Yerawada Central Prison was taken after former chief minister Narayan Rane found some cellular phones inside the Nashik jail during an inspection a month ago.
The charger of a cellular phone was found lying near a toilet at the campus of Donje Yard. The officials recovered a video cassette on Kalani's election campaign which was undertaken while he was contesting the recent State Assembly elections from Ulhasnagar and some packets containing dry fruits hidden in a suitcase lying in Kalani's cell, the prison officials said.
Cash of over Rs 27,000 was found during the search of two adjoining cells. Two luxurious beds, which were apparently smuggled inside the prison, were also found during the search, according to the prison officials.
Kalani, who is facing a trial under the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for the alleged murder of Anna Shetty, has been lodged at the Donje Yard near the building housing the office of the Jail Superintendent.
The Yerawada Central Prison is one of the high security jails in the state. Every visitor has to write his name and address along with the identity of the prisoner he wants to meet in a register immediately after entering the jail.
Every person entering the jail is frisked before he is allowed to cross the other gates between the office of Jail Superintendent and the area where barracks are located. No visitors are allowed to enter the cells where prisoners are kept.
