Pune hostel wardens strip three girls for alleged theft

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, NOV 7: In a shocking incident, two superintendents from the girl's hostel run by the Bahujan Hitay Trust at Vishrantwadi allegedly stripped three inmates in full view of all the hostelites for their suspected involvement in a theft.

The two hostel superintendents, Anita Bhagat and Pratibha Moon, were charged with outraging the modesty of the three girls under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and common intention under Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code after one of the three girls lodged a first information report (FIR) against them at the Yerawada police station late on Friday night.

In her first information report (FIR), the 12-year-old victim alleged that Moon and Bhagat had stripped her and two other girls in their office on October 18.

Instead of reporting the incident to the police immediately, the panicked girls went home and complained to their parents. However, one of the victims returned and approached the Yerawada police after her parents advised her to lodge a formal complaint.According to the first information report (FIR), Moon and Bhagat were enraged when one of the hostel inmates, Sapna Sasane, approached them and reported that someone had stolen her money. The police said Sasane told the superintendents that she suspected the three girls for the theft.

At around 6 pm on October 18, Bhagat and Moon summoned the three inmates to their office for questioning about the alleged theft. Bhagat and Moon then asked the three girls to strip under the garb of frisking them. When the girls refused, both the superintendents forcibly stripped the girls.

Two years ago, two hostel inmates had gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Later, their highly decomposed bodies were found near the Karla caves. Since the circumstances in which the two girls died could not be ascertained, the police had recorded it as a case of accidental deaths.
