No steps taken to treat bio-medical waste yet

N SAYEERAM
CHENNAI, NOV 7: Hospitals and nursing homes in Tamil Nadu that are a major source of bio-medical wastes, are yet to take any step to fulfil the directive from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest to ensure that these waste are treated and disposed in a prescribed manner. The Ministry has set December 31, 1999, as the deadline for health institutions in major cities to adhere to the norms. The Union Ministry, in a notification issued on July 20 1998, said that it should be the responsibility of every institution generating such wastes to take all steps to ensure that such waste is handled without any adverse effect to human health and environment.

According to the notification, bio-medical waste is defined as any waste which is generated during diagnosis, treatment or immunisation of human beings or animals, research activities, and in the production and testing of various biological categories.
