US may pull out of ABM treaty

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
WASHINGTON, NOV 7: US will pull out of the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty unless Russia agrees to modify the pact to enable Washington to pursue its national missile defence plan, Walter Slocombe, US under secretary for defence policy has said.

Delivering a speech at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies on Friday, the US under secretary Slocombe claimed that the limited missile defence the United States seeks against "rogue" states can be accommodated without too many changes in the treaty, but warned "we will not permit any other country to have a veto on actions that may be needed for the defence of our nation."
