Clinton may add India, Pak in his drug `majors' list

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
WASHINGTON, NOV 7: India, Pakistan and Afghanistan are among 28 drug producing or transitting countries which may be listed in the drug `majors' list by US President Bill Clinton, a newspaper said yesterday.

General Barry Mccaffrey, director of the office of the National Drug Control Policy, told a 34-nation drug summit here recently that the list was expected to be made public within a week, the Washington Times reported.

Listing as a drug major involves sanctions, but the President has authority - which he has always exercised selectively - to waive the sanctions, the paper said.

According to The Times, the administration has rejected the demand by Republican leaders to include Cuba in the list.
