4 gangsters arrested
Four armed gangsters were arrested in two separate raids in the city in the last 24 hours.

On a tip-off, a special squad attached to Unit-5 of the crime branch raided a hideout at Chembur and arrested two gangsters, Tahir Kutubali Pathan and Azad Barkatali Khan. A countrymade revolver with three live rounds was seized from the two. Two other gangsters, Subash Advilkar and Rajesh Sawant, were arrested in a similar operation. The gang affiliations of the arrested accused have been withheld as it might hamper further investigations. They have been booked under the Arms Act, 1951, and remanded to police custody.

The arrests come close on the heels of a gunrunner's arrest at Charkop near Kandivli on Friday evening. The gunrunner, Kulvindersingh Benz (24), supplied arms to the Chhota Rajan and Suresh Manchekar gangs, claimed police.Sub-inspector Vilas Gangwane said Benz was caught red-handed when he was waiting to pass on a weapon to a member of the Rajan gang near SplashRestaurant, Charkop.

New UDCT director
Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering, J B Joshi, has been appointed as the Director of the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), University of Mumbai, from November 1. Prof Joshi is a world-renowned researcher and an accomplished practising chemical engineer with several awards and fellowships to his credit. The earlier director was T K Venkatesan. He has retired.
