Priyanka, Pilot to get top slots in Congress soon

HARISH GUPTA
NEW DELHI, NOV 7: Rajesh Pilot and Kamal Nath are set to be made general secretaries in the shake-up to be effected by Congress president Sonia Gandhi shortly.

Since Sonia Gandhi has become Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and V George will be made her private secretary in the official capacity, Priyanka Gandhi may be inducted in the Congress president's office to assist her mother. However, modalities about Priyanka's future role in the party apparatus is yet to be finalised. One proposal is to appoint her as chief of the women's wing of the party which is being held by All India Congress Committee general secretary Ambica Soni. But Priyanka prefers a smooth entry into the party setup rather than devoting full time to politics.

Sonia Gandhi is keen to induct new, young faces in the organisation to revitalise it and make it capable of taking on the Bharatiya Janata Party. Kamal Nath called on Sonia Gandhi soon after his return from the United States on Saturday. Rajesh Pilot met her before sheleft for Amethi.

Though Sonia gave no indication to them of the posts to be offered to them, sources in the Congress president's office say that announcement regarding their induction in the AICC may be made soon. While one post of general secretary has fallen vacant with Madhavrao Scindia's elevation as deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, another general secretary R K Dhawan may also be given some other responsibility in the organisation. Sonia has not filled the three vacancies in the Congress Working Committee caused with the expulsion of Sharad Pawar, Tariq Anwar and P A Sangma. Apart from nominating Kamal Nath to the CWC she may also induct two other members into the committee.
