Barrington shows his pedigree

BANGALORE, NOV 7: Kerala bowlers' eyes must have lit up this morning at the sight of a frail, skinny lad walking out to open for Karnataka. But by mid-day the nineteen-year-old debutant Barrington Roland had essayed a key role as champions Karnataka, despite fielding a depleted side posted a healthy 251-2 on day one of their Ranji Trophy match today.

Named after his father's favourite cricketer, Ken Barrington (former England batting stalwart), the debutant and A Vijay added 153 runs for the second wicket after the early departure of skipper Sujit Somasundar. Barrington made a commendable 106 (165b, 241m, 13x4).

Vijay was batting 77 (269b, 322m, 8x4) and Thilak Naidu on 43 (87b, 123m, 6x4) at close.

Brief Scores: Karnataka 251-2 in 92 overs (Barrington Roland 106, A Vijay batting 77, Thilak Naidu batting 43) vs Kerala.

Laxman cracks 131
PANAJI: A superb knock of 131 (144b, 15x4, 3x6) by Venkata Sai Laxman and his two fruitful partnerships of 142 runs with Nanda Kishore and 73 runswith skipper Mohammad Azharuddin (batting 38) enabled Hyderabad amass 345 for 4 in 91 overs against hosts Goa at close of the opening day's of the four-day Ranji Trophy cricket match at Gymkhana ground here today.

Pathak spurs Andhra
VISAKHAPATNAM:
A fine knock by captain Amit Pathak (72: 9x4) and an unbroken stand worth 79 runs between YS Ranganath (36) and H Watekar enabled Andhra to 251 for seven against Tamil Nadu on the opening day of their Ranji match at the Municipal Corporation Stadium today.

Dharmani 2nd double ton
LUDHIANA:
An unbeaten 214 (26x4) by Pankaj Dharmani and skipper Vikram Rathore's knock of 114 (11x4, 2x6) powered Punjab to 452 for six on the second day oftheir four-day Ranji Trophy cricket match against Jammu & Kashmir here today.

Kaypee, Ghayas excel
GURGAON:
A devastating opening spell by Feroz Ghayas (5-39) saw Haryana skittle out Services for a paltry 100 and enforce the follow on after piling up 502 for four in their Ranji Trophy cricket match here today.

Brief scores: Haryana 502-4 decl (Jitender Singh 125, Jasbir Singh 116, P Sharma 53, A Kaypee 108 n.o., R Puri 87 vs Services 100 (F Ghayas 5-39, Vineet Jain 3-32) & 31-1.

Sehwag, Minhas shine
MANDI:
Sparkling knocks from Virender Sehwag (165: 15x4, 5x6) and Mithun Minhas (72) helped Delhi declare their first innings at 573 for seven before reducing Himachal Pradesh to 148 for five on the second day of their four-day Ranji Trophy cricket tie here today.
