MUMBAI, NOV 12: The State Government has decided to make State Transport buses more people friendly and profit making, said Minister of State for Transport Gangdhar Gade.Gade told reporters that though the corporation contributes Rs 600 crore to the exchequer every year, it has been running into losses since '95-96 when Shiv Sena-BJP government came into power. He felt that the need of 70 lakh daily commuters has to be recognised by giving more facilities to make it people friendly. The government is also thinking of adding more facilities in ST buses like televisions, air conditioners, comfortable sitting arrangements and attractive outlook, Gade added.
He pointed out that the main reason for heavy losses incurred by the corporation was maladministration and illegal transport system of the previous government. The corporation incurred losses of Rs 3.17 crore in '95-96, Rs 136.24 crore in '96-97, Rs 143.77 crore in '97-98 and Rs 142.5 crore in '98-99, after incurring a profit of Rs 3.51 crore in '94-95,he added.
