Bangalore, Nov 12: Truck drivers' increasing vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS is finally arousing concern. NGO estimates say that ``20 to 22 per cent of truckers working on the National Highways have STDs'' . With 1.35 lakh trucks operating in Karnataka and 30,000 trucks in Bangalore alone, the problem could soon reach gigantic proportions.Lorry owners in the state are worried and they have started an STD clinic in Chamrajpet and a trust for truckers' welfare.
Bangalore City Transporters' Association president B Channa Reddy explained why his association had started the clinic and the Truck Owners' Welfare and Charitable trust. ``A lot of truckers have STDs. But since they will never approach doctors on their own, we have to ask volunteers to mingle with them and advise them,'' he said.
At the clinic set up in August this year, truckers get free medicines and treatment and are also and are also advised on AIDS/HIV prevention.
