SMC corporators demand suspension of commissioner

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SOLAPUR, Nov 12: A tug of war is on among the Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) corporators and Municipal Commissioner D N Mandalekar and his assistant commissioners to prove the upperhand on the administration to run the city activities. Irked by the alleged high handedness of Mandalekar, the corporators passed a resolution on Thursday demanding the State Government to suspend Mandalekar immediately and to probe his working style. The house also passed a resolution of suspension of the assistant commissioner G.R. Godbole unanimously.

This is the second time in the history of the Solapur Municipal Corporation that the civic body has shown no-confidence in the working style of a commissioner. It can be recalled that the controversial SMC commissioner Bipin Mallick had earlier faced no-trust move and the house had sought his transfer. An inquiry and resolution of Mandalekar's suspension was passed.

The corporators levelled many charges against Mandalekar which include misuse of power while appointing six divisional officials in the city, causing loss to the SMC treasury with low quality of constructions of 21 common roads, giving appointment to assistant commissioner, Revenue, Anil Vapat illegally and granting authority of the commissioner to the assistant commissioner Godbole, who too misused the power.

However, Mandalekar has denied all charges and made it clear that everything had been done within the framework of the SMC law. In a press release issued here on Friday, the commissioner said that the six divisional officials had been given the responsibility according to sanctions given by the standing committee itself and before his tenure.

About 21 common roads, he said that the constructions were done only after the approval of the civic body and that the body had taken the issue in the discussion.

Appointment of assistant commissioner Anil Vipat, he maintained, had been made through advertisement published in the newspapers and selected on the criteria fixed for the post, he maintained.

The irked corporators decided to take the matter before chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh within a week by meeting him personally at Mumbai. The regular no-confidence motion against the SMC commissioners have made the farce of its seriousness.

Now all eyes are set on the decision of the State Government towards the resolution.
